This indicator allows funds to capture positive impacts in these areas by collating the number of people who have benefitted from essential services attributable to their projects. This is relevant to consider as land-use projects (sustainable agriculture, forestry, restoration) will often take place in countries and regions where access to essential services is an issue to be addressed. Access to essential services can build resilience in local communities and reduce their very high dependency on nature.

This indicator will often be built as part of a landscape investment plan. Investing directly or in-directly (through a business recipient investing in its value chain) will help producers and surrounding communities increase their well-being and hence remove pressure on land and forests as illegal activities would no longer be a necessity for a living. In addition, this well-being element would increase their ability to adapt to climate change effects, so it is linked to climate resilience of the populations. This indicator was added in August 2023.

The type and scale of benefits generated by a project will vary depending on the local context (e.g. landscape socio-economic profile, activity type, threat and drivers of poverty, resilience to climate change). This indicator should be measured following a stepwise process as follows:

Identify the potential essential services that will be provided by and reasonably attributable to the project. These may include: provision of access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); provision of clean energy (eg. solar panels, wind power, clean cooking solutions, etc), and access to education.

Calculate the number of people within local communities reporting access to these essential services (as identified in step 1), first as a pre-investment baseline, and then periodically throughout the investment period. This can be conducted via surveys within local communities engaged within the project. Data should be collected with reference to gender/sex and other protected characteristics where relevant (eg. data disaggregated by population group and other characteristics) so as to ensure that interventions do not exacerbate existing inequalities with those groups of people that are considered vulnerable, including indigenous peoples.

Sum the number of people benefitting from one or more of the essential services provided by the project to be reported for this indicator

Only benefits from essential services with reasonable additionality and attribution to the project should be counted – ie. benefits that can be linked to the fund’s intervention, and that would not have happened otherwise.

This is a high-level, collated indicator, which may combine benefits from a number of different essential services. Assess the value and opportunity of presenting data disaggregated into the impacts from different essential services when communicating the indicator, as well as giving the overall figure. Qualitative case studies would be helpful to add further detail on the types on impacts, and their particular impacts on different individuals. Results should be disaggregated by gender/sex and other protected characteristics (eg. whether individuals consider themselves a member of a indigenous community, socioeconomic status) where relevant, as well as refer to a baseline at start of investment

The indicator is appropriate for providing an indicative estimate of the number of people benefiting from improved access to essential services as a result of the project. It does not attempt to quantify the level of the benefit obtained by people as many social benefits do not translate into easily comparable units of measurement (e.g. $ value).

This indicator is of particular value for funds with a core social objective, or where projects are being carried out as part of a landscape approach and in Least Developed Countries.
