Increases in income due to fund investments are an important factor in increasing quality of life and resilience, as well as reducing pressures on surrounding ecosystems. Increased income can build resilience in local communities (or households) and reduce their very high dependency on nature. Increased income, therefore, is an important indicator of both environmental and social impacts.<\/p>\n

This indicator demonstrates the economic benefits felt by households where an increase in income can be reasonably attributed to the investment \u2013 for example, local communities, employees, suppliers, etc. – which can be obtained via increased production, reduced costs, or increased prices achieved.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that income is measured at the level of the household, and reflects the fact that household income can come from a variety of sources. These sources can include wages, as well as sales of produce grown on smallholdings, other small business incomes, and remittances. This indicator focuses on income, and not wages, as it is designed to capture both wage increases and other financial benefits to smallholder farmers that are impacted by the investment. (Wages are mentioned more directly in LG 03 \u2013 Number of jobs created<\/em>.) This indicator was updated in August 2023.<\/p>\n","methodology":"

Calculate the number of households reporting increased income as a result of the project. This can be of any households where an increase in income can be reasonably attributed to the investment \u2013 for example, local communities, employees, suppliers, etc. This can be calculated via an annual survey of households engaged within the project, including a pre-investment baseline survey. This information should be collected taking into account gender, and where possible by other vulnerable groups, such as indigenous peoples (i.e., data disaggregated by sex and population group). Where feasible, surveys should also be answered by male and female family heads \u2013 for example, this helps to ensure that the perspectives of women are systematically considered<\/p>\n

The concept of living income should be used in the monitoring. IDH have developed a clear Living Income Roadmap<\/a>, where they state, \u2018Living income is about households having the ability to afford a decent standard of living. It is defined as the net annual income required for a household in a particular place to afford a decent standard of living for all members of that household. This is referred to as the living income benchmark. Elements of a decent standard of living include access to food, water, housing, education, healthcare, transport, clothing and other essential needs, including provision for unexpected events.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n

An additional indicator to display alongside increases in income would be the number of household in receipt of a living income, as discussed above. Number of participants reporting increased income, (preferably disaggregated by gender\/sex), and where relevant by local communities is one of the KPIs considered by the fund AGRI3 in its E&S framework.
