Providing training on best practice for sustainable agriculture and\/or improved forest management is a key tenet of both increasing production and improving local livelihoods. Tracking the number of people trained over the course of a project is one way of tracking impact, however for true impact measurement, investors or monitoring teams should return to the people trained to track the number who have then changed their actions and are applying best practise.<\/p>\n
Related indicators that provide further detail on impacts include PRO 01 \u2013 Increase in yield through sustainable intensification<\/em> and PRO 06 \u2013 Pesticide use on farm<\/em>. This indicator was added in August 2023.<\/p>\n","methodology":" Project managers should collect data on the training offered through their projects, and who attends, which is then collated by fund impact managers. A baseline should also be recorded through a survey at the start of the training on what practices participants are currently using on their land. Training records should be disaggregated by gender and other protected characteristics where relevant, such as the number of indigenous people included in the training, to ensure that training provided by the project does not exacerbate existing inequalities.<\/p>\n To track the true impact of the trainings, monitoring teams should return to the people trained 6 \u2013 12 months after the training with a survey to track how many people have changed their actions and adopted one or more of the best practice actions discussed in the training.<\/p>\n Trainings counted here should be of benefit to the livelihoods of those trained, not just of benefit to their employers. Trainings which are solely contributing to the smooth running of an existing business, and are needed for smooth operation of that business, should be considered as business as usual and not counted here.<\/p>\n This indicator is cumulative, and it should reflect annually the total number of beneficiaries benefited, who have changed their behaviours as a result of the training, over the project implementation period.<\/p>\n","communication":" This indicator should be communicated as the number of people who have changed their behaviours, and adopted more sustainable agriculture and improved forest management techniques, as a result of the training. To add more colour and detail to this indicator, qualitative case studies of the impact of training on individuals should also be collected. It should be noted that there may be other barriers to behaviour change even after receiving training \u2013 for example, financial barriers may still restrict individuals capacity to change their actions.<\/p>\n If a survey to track behaviour change is not viable for the fund, then the total number of people trained can be communicated, with further breakdowns by training type, and characteristics of attendees (e.g. gender\/sex, population group, age) where relevant.<\/p>\n","considerations":[{"text":"For training to count against this indicator, it should provide added value to trainees above and beyond simply helping an agricultural or forestry company achieve a stated aim.
