This indicator is usable for investment considering benefits beyond land use, including value chain impacts. It allows funds to capture these positive impacts by capturing the number of people who have benefitted from substantial access to new infrastructure developed by the project.<\/p>\n<p>The impact attribution to the fund may be part of a sustainable landscape investment plan. Only people benefitting from infrastructure with reasonable additionality and attribution to the project should be counted \u2013 i.e. benefits that can be linked direct to the fund\u2019s intervention, and that would not have happened otherwise. This indicator was added in August 2023.<\/p>\n","methodology":"<p>The type and scale of benefits generated by a project will vary depending on the local conditions (e.g. country, activity, local socio-economic status). In the event a landscape approach exists, socio-economic data shall be used from the landscape scoping.<\/p>\n<p>This indicator should be measured following a stepwise process as follows:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Consider the stage of value chain:\n<ul>\n<li>Input supply: Stage of providing goods and services prior to agricultural processes (such as seeds, fertilizers, soil testing, crop spraying). [USAID]<\/li>\n<li>Production: Stage of engaging directly in and\/or during the agricultural process<\/li>\n<li>Processing: Stage of adding commercial value to agricultural goods by refining, developing, or otherwise facilitating commercialization<\/li>\n<li>Distribution\/Export: Stage of transporting an agricultural product<\/li>\n<li>Ancillary services: Stage of adding to agricultural value chain while operating not directly within it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Identify the potential substantive infrastructure benefits, enabling sustainable production, that will be generated by and attributable to the project. These may include: new access to processing or warehousing facilities; access to sustainable inputs; platforms increasing access to new markets; the provision of technical assistance to improve business models or production, or access to novel financing streams to increase sustainable production.<\/li>\n<li>Calculate the number of people within local communities reporting substantive benefits related to each of the positive livelihoods impacts of the project (as identified in step 1). This can be conducted via surveys within local communities engaged within the project. Substantive benefits should be interpreted as access to the infrastructure \/ assistance over a sustained period, not a one-off interaction. Data should be collected in a manner that is disaggregated by gender and other protected characteristics where relevant, such as members of indigenous groups, to ensure that interventions do not exacerbate existing inequalities.<\/li>\n<li>Sum the number of people benefitting from one or more of the infrastructure impacts to be reported for this indicator.<\/li>\n<li>Under this indicator, disaggregated reporting to the appropriate level can be provided. For example, reporting the number of people benefiting from each individual positive impact.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","communication":"<p>This is a high-level, collated indicator, which may combine benefits from different infrastructure interventions. Therefore, we would suggest disaggregating the data into the impacts from different projects or types of infrastructure when communicating the indicator, as well as giving the overall figure. Also disaggregate data by gender\/sex and other protected characteristics (eg. population group, age, socioeconomic status) where relevant. Qualitative case studies would be helpful to add further detail on the types on impacts, and their particular impacts on different individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The indicator is appropriate for providing an indicative estimate of the number of people benefiting from improved access to infrastructure as a result of the project. It does not attempt to quantify the level of the benefit obtained by people as many social benefits do not translate into easily comparable units of measurement (e.g. $ value).<\/p>\n","considerations":[{"text":"This indicator is of particular value where projects are looking to develop value chain and business infrastructure to benefit project participants and the local community."},{"text":"Only benefits with clear additionality and attribution to the project should be counted \u2013 ie. benefits that can be linked direct to the fund\u2019s intervention, and that would not have happened otherwise."},{"text":"This indicator provides an indication of the reach of infrastructure and value chain benefits and can be monitored through engagement with project participants.
