Sustainable production includes agroforestry systems, silvopasture, or organic production, amongst other systems, and covers techniques such as crop rotation, intercropping, low\/no till, use of organic fertilisation, and integrated pest management. This indicator can act as a proxy for biodiversity, on the assumption that sustainable production systems have a positive impact on biodiversity, compared to more conventional production systems. Relatedly, the <em>Increase in yield on existing production area<\/em> is measured in indicator <em>PRO 01<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It is key to look at both the area under sustainable production and the yield produced from these areas in parallel. Whilst it is important to minimise the impact of production on the natural world (captured by the area which is sustainably managed), if that comes at the expense of yield then production will likely be pushed elsewhere. This is known as the \u2018leakage effect\u2019 and is important to consider when investing in sustainable production projects \u2013 if the demand from the market stays the same, but yield goes down from sustainably managed areas, then it is likely that that yield deficit will be made up by sourcing from less sustainable production systems elsewhere, and this may even lead to greater deforestation. This indicator was added in August 2023.<\/p>\n","methodology":"<p>To measure this indicator, funds first need to define what they will consider as sustainable production within their investments. This could be land managed under production systems generally considered sustainable \u2013 agroforestry, silvopasture, or organic systems \u2013 and\/or where sustainable practices such as such as crop rotation, intercropping, low\/no till, use of organic fertilisation, and integrated pest management are used. Alternatively, alignment with a certification scheme such as Rainforest Alliance, Global G.A.P. or Better Cotton Initiative could be used to define sustainable production. There is no one agreed definition of sustainable production as it varies by geography and system, however the FAO\u2019s report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/i3940e\/i3940e.pdf\">\u2018Building a common vision for sustainable food and agriculture\u2019<\/a> is a useful and unifying resource in this space.<\/p>\n<p>Once a definition has been agreed, spatial data should be collected on the project areas where sustainable production is taking place, as reported by land managers. This should be verified by site visits where possible, and\/or certification. Remote sensing can also be a helpful tool to monitor for land use change in an affordable and scalable manner<\/p>\n","communication":"<p>This indicator can be aggregated across a fund\u2019s portfolio to give an indication of how much of the area is under sustainable management for production. Displaying the area as a percentage of the total productive area in the portfolio, or of the total area of the portfolio, would give a better indication of scale.<\/p>\n<p>This indicator measures the area where an intervention is taken place but does not capture the quality of the intervention.
