This indicator tracks the area of project land under sustainable forest management, as defined in the Helsinki Declaration as \u2018The stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions, at local, national, and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other ecosystems.\u2019<\/em> This allows funds to track the area of forests within their investments which are being sustainably used in a productive manner.<\/p>\n

By comparison, forest area which is being managed for protection (and not for production) should be counted under BIO 01 \u2013 Area of natural ecosystem protected<\/em>, and areas of land being restored to a forested state should be counted under BIO 04 \u2013 Area under ecological restoration<\/em>.<\/p>\n","methodology":"

Calculate the amount of forest land under sustainable management using the following steps:<\/p>\n

  1. Consider the two key definitions for this indicator which are given in the Definitions module \u2013 for \u2018forest\u2019 and for \u2018sustainable forest management\u2019. You may want to derive further detail on what sustainable forest management looks like in your project sites by referring to guidance from PEFC (\u2018What is sustainable forest management?\u2019<\/a>), and referring to relevant national laws on forest management, as suggested in the EU Taxonomy description of Forest Management<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Define sustainable management<\/em> on a case-by-case basis by detailing requirements above and beyond Business as Usual for the activity in the region. You should consider aligning with a well-established sustainable forestry certification scheme like FSC and PEFC if suitable for your project and accessible to the land managers involved.<\/li>\n
  3. Identify areas within invested projects that meet this requirement. Collect spatial data on the areas within projects which are considered to be under sustainable forest management. This may require on-site visits for initial verification, and ongoing spot checks, but monitoring via remote sensing to check forest intactness is also recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    For land being under sustainable management to be included as forest, it should meet the minimum definition as outlined by the Accountability Framework Initiative for \u2018forest\u2019, as seen in our Definitions module. Forest here can include managed forestry \u2013 a separate definition is given for \u2018natural forest\u2019.<\/p>\n","communication":"

    Results can be presented as an absolute number and as a percentage to illustrate the area under active management for forest sustainable use. Percentage of forests within project areas under active management for sustainable use can be displayed to provide insight into the scale of on-site actions.<\/p>\n
