Water storage capacity is an important factor in climate adaption and resilience, as it enables projects and associated communities to avoid water shortages\/scarcity which are becoming increasingly likely due to climate change. This is relevant to consider as land-use projects (sustainable agriculture, forestry, restoration) will often take place in countries and regions where water provision is limited or rapidly changing due to climate change, and water is often critical to projects themselves, for instance for agricultural production, as well as surrounding communities.<\/p>\n<p>Measures to improve water storage capacity include construction of water tanks, artificial reservoirs and other water storage methods, and would be specific to each project. This indicator allows capacity to be aggregated by looking at the volume of storage capacity generated. This indicator was added in August 2023.<\/p>\n","methodology":"<p>This indicator is measured by assessing the potential volume of water able to be stored in infrastructure delivered by and attributable to the investment. Only water storage capacity which is additional as a result of the investment \u2013 i.e. storage that would not have been created otherwise \u2013 should be assessed here.<\/p>\n<p>Volume of potential water storage capacity can be measured through direct reporting by projects. If necessary, average tank storage could be estimated and multiplied by the number of tanks on site identified by remote sensing, but this would be less accurate, and the additionality and attributability of the storage identified would be harder to ascertain than via direct reporting and interactions with project developers and managers.<\/p>\n<p>Water storage capacity should be assessed on a yearly basis and tracked over time.<\/p>\n<p><em>The text for this indicator has been developed in collaboration with the UNEP Climate Change and Adaptation Unit. <\/em><\/p>\n","communication":"<p>This indicator should be presented in terms of volume of water storage developed, and it could be disaggregated by type of storage method.<\/p>\n<p>The volume of water storage could be summed across the portfolio on a yearly basis to generate aggregate data. However, given that the same storage capacity will be included in multiple years, it is not appropriate to sum the indicator across years.<\/p>\n<p>This indicator is a proxy for one element of the project\u2019s climate resilience. It cannot directly be used to communicate about the whole climate adaptation effort, or resilience to future climate stresses, but is a helpful indication of steps taken to reduce stresses from increasingly erratic or variable rainfall.
