STAR is made up of two complementary global layers representing threat abatement (STARt) and restoration potential (STARr).

This indicator is useful to consider alongside BIO 01 (Area of natural ecosystem protected) to quantify the significance and potential impact of protecting the area in question. Note that unless calibrated STAR is used (explained further below), this indicator alone should not be used to track changes over the course of a project, as estimated STAR is not systematically updated on a regular basis.

This indicator is particularly useful to consider at a screening stage, to assess which potential project sites hold the most potential for impact, and therefore where to prioritize protection efforts for maximum impact.

The Species Threat Abatement and Recovery (STAR) metric provides an indicator of the potential reduction in species extinction risk through actions to address threats (measured by STARt) or restore habitat (STARr) within a given area. The indicator accounts for the number of species present, their status according toThe IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ and the proportion of species’ ranges contained within an Area of Interest. Global raster data layers for both the Threat Abatement and Recovery aspects of the metric are available through the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT).

An overlay analysis can be conducted using areas under protection through a fund’s projects and the STAR layer. The sum of STAR units contained with this area can then be calculated and represent a potential contribution (if realized) towards corporate, national or international targets for positive biodiversity action.

STAR Scores are disaggregated in IBAT Reports to provide a breakdown of the most significant to species in any Area of Interest, which helps to guide the focus of conservation measures to ensure they are having maximum impact in terms of species conservation.

Where time and budget allow, Potential STAR (calibrated) should be used in this indicator. This is a ground-truthed, validated, version of Potential STAR (estimated) that applies site-specific data on species status and/or threats. This provides a more accurate picture for the area of interest and can be calculated to a higher level of resolution than the STAR data layers which are only available at a 5km2 resolution. (More information on calibrated STAR can be found on page 7 of the STAR Data Layer Business User Guidance.)

The STAR data layers provide an indication of the maximum potential reduction in species extinction risk that could be achieved at any scale from local (~5km²) to global.

For communication, the STAR value of land under protection for each project should be displayed alongside the extent of that area (from BIO 01). A STAR score needs to be used with other metrics which can detect a change in the state of biodiversity, or track implementation of actions. In this way, the STAR score acts as a significance flag, allowing for comparison of the impact of protecting different areas of land. STAR can be particularly useful to assess in a pre-investment stage, to compare the potential impact of investing in different areas.

As the IUCN Red List is not systematically updated on a regular basis, positive species conservation actions on the ground may not be reflected in the STAR layer for some time. Therefore, this indicator should not be used to show the impact of the project intervention, but rather to highlight the potential scale of impact at the site, as compared to a different site.

Given this indicator’s focus on land under management for protection, it may be useful for funds investing in projects with a focus on conversion-free production.
This is a species-based biodiversity indicator but does not consider ecosystem extent or condition.
STAR provides an indication of the threats most significantly contributing to species extinction risk.
