This is known as ‘ecological restoration’, which is defined in Principle 3 of the Principles for Ecosystem Restoration as: ‘[aiming] to remove degradation and [assisting] in recovering an ecosystem to the trajectory it would be on if degradation had not occurred, accounting for environmental change.’

Users can disaggregate areas of based on their global biodiversity significance by using significance qualifiers (see below). For example, protecting a very rare ecosystem would generate more impact for biodiversity than protecting a more common ecosystem.

This indicator is relevant where restoration activities are a part of a funded project’s remit. Where this is the case, spatial data should be collected on the project areas where ecological restoration is taking place. That is, where land is being managed to transition back to its natural trajectory after being previously degraded, either actively or passively.

Ultimately, if successful, areas under restoration can be considered ‘restored’ and would no longer be tracked under this indicator. Successfully restored areas can be considered as natural ecosystem and should then be reported under BIO 01 (Area of natural ecosystem protected). This transition should be verified with on-site visits.

Adding a significance qualifier: To add an indication of the global biodiversity significance of the area under restoration, users could consider disaggregating data at the portfolio or project level with one of the following options.

Percentage of area restored which is considered a Key Biodiversity Area

Percentage of area restored which is considered Critical Habitat

Percentage of area restored which is listed as Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems, but note that this categorization is not yet globally applied. This makes it, currently, more relevant for investments in Europe and North America.

At a portfolio level, the indicator could also be paired with BIO 06 – ‘Species Threat Abatement and Recovery (STAR) value of land under ecological restoration’

The indicator is appropriate for providing an indicative estimate of the hectares of degraded land that are in the process of ecological restoration each year across the Fund portfolio. The same hectares will be included in multiple years as restoration is an ongoing process, so it is not appropriate to sum the indicator across years.

Disaggregating by the type of the ecosystem being restored could be considered. For example, “Area of natural forests under ecological restoration”, for investments focused on forest protection. Additionally, disaggregation by significance qualifier could also be considered. For example, “Proportion of Key Biodiversity Area under ecological restoration”.

Some countries lay out legal requirements to restore a certain proportion of natural ecosystems (for example, in Brazil’s Forest Code). For investments where this is the case, it would be helpful to disaggregate the area restored by what is voluntary and what is required by statutes or regulations. This allows positive impact beyond legal requirements to be clearly displayed.

Useful for funds investing in projects which have an element of restoration in their project plan (whether this is a key aim, or a co-benefit).
